Our cake stall at the Pendragon School Summer Fete on the 3rd raised a welcome £65.00 to boost funds. Thank you to all our members who provided such delicious goodies and to everyone who supported us, we hope you enjoyed your purchases!
The annual Bring and Share lunch at Ann’s home on the 9th was a great success with the buffet table piled high with a mouthwatering selection of salads and desserts. Over 20 members were able to chat, relax and enjoy Ann’s generous hospitality and beautiful garden. In August we will meet for a cream tea, a wander round and no doubt some retail therapy at Wimpole Hall, then our monthly lunch in September will be at the Golden Ball in Boxworth.
On 15th July we welcomed eight visitors to our 8th birthday and monthly meeting where we were entertained by Sue Baker, who firstly described the history of and the costumes associated with belly dancing, before giving us a demonstration. When it came to Sue encouraging us to join her and give it a go we were like most such gatherings – no one wanted to get to their feet. Then one brave soul stood up, slowly followed by a few more … then more …. so in no time at all the vast majority of us were getting a wiggle on while having great difficulty in controlling our laughter!
Members of our choir had an unforgettable day on the 18th at the wedding of their Musical Director Jan in Barton, during which they sang ‘All of Me’ by John Legend (a favourite of the happy couple) as Jan and Russ signed the register.
The choir would dearly love to expand to include other ladies from across this area who just enjoy the fun of getting together and singing so, no, you don’t have to belong to the WI. The Papworth and Elsworth W.I. choir is named ‘Lyrical Voices’ and usually meets for one and a half hours at 7.30pm on the first, second and fourth Wednesday each month in the Studio next door to the Library. This is a good time for newcomers to join in (many of the current members had never sung in a choir before and didn’t even believe they could sing!) as they will be starting to rehearse new songs ready for The Festival of Choirs they are hosting in the Village Hall in early October. So if you are interested in giving it a go (no audition necessary) please just come along or find out more by visiting the choir section on our website or by emailing jb.varrierjones@btopenworld.com.
Many of our members enjoyed meeting with other local WIs in the beautiful gardens of a traditional thatched cottage at the Yelling W.I. Summer Garden Party on July 29th . This Annual event is always a fun afternoon with a variety of stalls selling all manner of second-hand goodies, a tombola and a large raffle accompanied by a seemingly never-ending supply of tea and absolutely delicious home-made cakes.
