Monthly Archives: January 2017

January 2017

Once again our monthly ‘lunch’ was replaced by an evening dinner outing so that those with daytime commitments had the opportunity to come along too. This time those who attended were made welcome at the George & Dragon, Elsworth and enjoyed a convivial evening together. We are now planning to feature a dining-out evening every third month.

At the January meeting we were joined by several visitors and were particularly pleased to welcome some from the recently defunct Cambourne WI. Our Speaker was our very own Rosie Blencowe who fascinated, informed and entertained us with the second part of her series about Pauline, Napoleon’s sister, whose infamously colourful life from gutter to Princess ended after her death in Italy with her being buried between two Popes! Rosie also provided us with some delicious Italian Pannetone to have with our teas and coffees, that perfectly complemented the ‘flavour’ of the evening. Thank you Rosie.

For the forthcoming meeting on 15th February we are delighted to be welcoming Guinevere Glasfurd, a Cambridgeshire author, whose acclaimed novel ‘The Words in My Hand’ was one of just eight shortlisted for the 2016 Costa First Novel Award.

The darts team members played their first match of the season against Eltisley W.I., not with the result they would have chosen but very enjoyable nevertheless…………….

…………..while the choir members have started working on their repertoire for the year ahead.

We have been busy making the preliminary arrangements for a ladies Fashion Show with pop-up shop in the Village Hall on Thursday 6th April at 7.30 pm. The evening is open to both members and non-members so mark the date in your diary and come along for a fun evening. Tickets are £6.00 – see the posters around the village for details – with all profits going to the Papworth Doctor’s Surgery.
