Papworth Hospital Visit

On 21 October we enjoyed an extra outing to Papworth Hospital. We started by browsing the lovely gifts in the gift shop and made some early Christmas purchases before moving into the Heritage Centre where Becky Proctor, the Heritage Officer, showed us a very interesting British Council film from the 1940s about the Papworth Settlement. We ended the afternoon with a delicious tea of cucumber sandwiches and a choice of lovely cakes.

Theatrical Make-up Evening

At our October 2013 meeting Christine Clarke came along to speak on “My Life as a Theatrical Make-up Artist”.  Whilst making up six W.I. members as a horror zombie, cat, Marie Antoinette, a standard makeup (W4) and one facial injury and one hand cut by glass, she regalled us with tales of working on many well known productions including at the RSC at Stratford, Cats, Lord of the Rings and Upstairs Downstairs.

Cambridge Community Awards

We are all so proud of W.I. member Jenny Wilson and her husband Bob who recently were successful in the Pride of Cambridge Community Awards 2013 run by the Cambridge Newspapers.  Bob and Jenny were awarded the Good Friend award.  Many of you will already know Jenny and Bob who together have contributed so much to the village.  At Pendragon School they helped teach children to read and set up the garden for the children to grow plants and vegetables and showed them how to sell them at the school fair.  Jenny has been active with the Trefoil Guild, Craft Club, and Friends of the Library and is integral to our Women’s Institute having been a Committee member and served as a very good Secretary for 3 years.  Bob has been active in taking disabled people for days out and transporting them to social activities.  He also provided hospital transport, and a lending hand where needed, and has been so supportive of our W.I., being our speaker on at least two occasions and on one of them he related how the two of them were on their way to a Buckingham Palace Garden Party and came to the aid of a jewellers after witnessing a raid.   Jenny and Bob were nominated for the award by Collette Bradshaw, Joyce Burton and Liz Davies.  Their prize is an in-store appointment with a Home Design Adviser and £600 to spend on home furnishings at John Lewis who were co-sponsors of the awards together with Ridgeons.  Our thanks, Jenny and Bob, for all you have done for us over the 11 years you have lived in Papworth.

October Lunch at Wimpole Hall

Our October lunch was held at Wimpole Hall.  After a lovely lunch in the restaurant, members enjoyed browsing in the gift and fudge shop, purchasing plants in the courtyard and some members walked to the walled garden to admire the lovely Autumn display in the borders and the gourds displayed in the greenhouse.
