PAPWORTH EVERARD WI REPORT FOR JUNE 2021

PAPWORTH EVERARD WI

Our Zoom meeting took place on 16th June when, although fewer members than usual met, we enjoyed a great evening.

Following the usual business our speaker for the evening was Kate Kirk Writer and Lecturer who gave a delightful and very informative illustrated talk about her Amazing Aunt – Dame Cecily Saunders noted for her work in terminal care research and  pioneer of the modern hospice movement.  Dame Cecily worked throughout her life tirelessly to establish the importance of palliative care for terminally ill patients and their families and her work continues today with the expansion of Hospices all over the country and indeed many parts of the world.

OUR NEXT MEETING IS A PICNIC IN THE PARK ON SATURDAY 24TH JULY – WEATHER PERMITTING.   THIS WILL BE OUR FIRST FACE-TO-FACE MEETING

 TIME TO CELEBRATE

PAPWORTH EVERARD WI REPORT FOR MAY 2021

We had our third full Zoom Members’ meeting on Tuesday 18th of May, and happily saw lots of smiling members join us.

Our speaker for the month was Chris Hickey a very knowledgeable plant and vegetable grower, having worked for Frosts Garden Centre for some 16 years. Chris told us she got her love of gardening from her Father, he  had “green fingers” and specialised in growing Dahlias and Geraniums. Chris herself has a compact and very colourful garden along with an allotment for growing vegetables.  We were given lots of tips on which type of composts to use, growing and storing bulbs, types of Clematis and one of her favourites, the Alstroemeria flowers/plants.

Regarding vegetables Chris suggested members could put some  compost into a container, set some lettuce and spring onion seeds, then when they grow the leaves can be freshly picked as and when required.

Chris was  a very entertaining speaker and considering she was suffering from a bad back she still  kindly joined  us from her granddaughters bed, for which we were very grateful.

Still on the subject of gardening, here are some lovely words from Daphne with supporting pictures from her garden.

‘Having experienced exceptionally hot weather after so much rain over previous weeks it inspired me to take a few photos of the wonderful blooms just showing their colourful faces to bring us joy and a smile on our faces.   We live in a great area with lots of places and gardens to enjoy; so enjoy the outdoor life and explore our surroundings.

OUR NEXT ZOOM MEETING IS ON TUESDAY 15TH JUNE  AT 7.30PM WHEN WE HAVE SPEAKER KATE KIRK TALKING ON THE SUBJECT OF:

 CICILY SAUNDERS THE CAMBRIDGE PHENOMENEN

Kate Kirk is a writer and communications consultant . She currently focuses on management and entrepreneurship, and is co-author of The Cambridge Phenomenon: 50 Years of Innovation and Enterprise. A niece of Dame Cicely, Kate volunteered at St Christopher’s Hospice in her youth. She is also a trustee of the Arthur Rank Hospice Charity in Cambridge and volunteers for the hospice in a variety of roles.

WE LOOK FORWARD TO SEEING YOU ALL FOR ANOTHER GREAT EVENING

PAPWORTH EVERARD WI REPORT FOR APRIL 2021

We enjoyed our second Zoom Members Meeting on 23rd March with more members mastering the technology to join us this month. The theme for the evening was Easter and many of us appeared in our Easter bonnets/hats/bunny ears to get in the Eastertide mood.

Some of the ladies showed off their lovely easter crafts on screen – many of which were made and donated to the Papworth Community Group to hang in the trees along the Craft Walk that the Group had organised for the Easter weekend.

Following the usual business we had two demonstrations by members of the Committee, Lyn and Gill.  Lyn showed us how to make a simple plant arrangement on a plate to bring a little sunshine into the house.  By using a few small pots of spring bulbs and primroses Lyn’s display looked amazing.  Gill then demonstrated making yummy chocolate easter nests using crushed shredded wheat, melted chocolate and some colourful mini eggs.

Not all the ladies are able to join the Zoom meetings at the moment but are kept fully informed and copied in with everything that goes on.  To ensure we include the whole membership members of the Committee delivered lovely chocolate Easter bunnies to all the ladies as a little treat for Easter.

A talk by Andy Malcom from The Fishermen’s Mission entitled

THE REAL COST OF FISH AND CHIPS

papworth WI – activities for Feb/March 2021

Many members joined us for our first ‘Zoom’ meeting’ on 16th February and were delighted to see and chat to many friends.  We started in the normal way with the business catching up on recent information and this was followed by our first talk and demonstration via the Zoom network.  Our very own Daphne gave a brilliant talk and demonstration entitled Nurture and Nourish when she explained the importance of looking after and caring for ourselves mentally and physically before we can look after and care for others.  We all joined in with Daphne doing some meditative head and shoulder exercises concentrating on our breathing – a wonderful relaxing end to our evening.

EASTER – BRING ME SUNSHINE

Several ladies wore their Easter bonnets/bunny ears to make our Easter meeting go with a swing.  A lovely demonstration by Lyn on how to bring Sunshine into your room by making a lovely spring arrangement on a plate from small flowers, plants and greenery from your very own garden.   Gill then demonstrated how to make chocolate easter nests filled with lovely little mini-eggs – delicious.

Several ladies made Easter crafts and Easter bonnets and donated items to hang in the trees for the Papworth Community Group who organised a Craft Walk in Papworth over the Easter.

Our next members’ Zoom Meeting Tuesday April 20th at 7.30pm

PAPWORTH EVERARD WI – JANUARY 2021

Share the love

Due to the current restrictions we find ourselves once again unable to take part in our normal everyday activities and who can believe it is nearly a year ago since the first lockdown!

Our members continue to support one another by way of telephone calls, quizzes, poems and various news items and our Committee continue to meet monthly on Zoom to discuss future plans for the members once we can return to our monthly meetings.  We are planning to hold a Zoom WI Meeting again in February for the members with a short talk on ‘Wellbeing during the pandemic’ and a fun quiz.  This will hopefully be an opportunity for those able to join to chat with friends who they have not seen for some considerable time and certainly have a few laughs at the same time.

With Valentine’s day looming we also have something up our sleeve for members to enjoy in order to ‘spread the love’ with their friends.

HAPPY VALENTINE’S DAY- MAY YOUR DAY BE FULL OF LOVE AND HOPE
