Papworth Everard WI Activity for November 2019

PAPWORTH EVERARD WI – WHAT’S BEEN HAPPENING DURING NOVEMBER

Early in the month several of us went along to the Garden Centre at Roxton for a little early Christmas Shopping. There was a great variety of gifts for all from chocolates and biscuits to candles, ornaments, clothes and obviously plenty of beautiful indoor plants with the Poinsettias taking centre stage. After shopping refreshments were the order of the day including a most enjoyable lunch.

Our speaker this month was entitled ‘ Police Officer to Therapist’ when Sharon Herbert spoke of her work specialising in overcoming Anxiety, PTSD, Leaving Panic Attacks Behind and Managing Stress.

Having worked in the Emergency Services for the past 27 years and juggled a family and career with the challenges these bring there is not much of life that Sharon hasn’t seen or experienced. Through a complimentary mix of her Cognitive Hypnotherapy & Coaching methods she can help you make positive changes, identify and address the underlying factors that are contributing to where you are at. Whether you are in a place of overwhelm, burnout, experienced trauma or other significant emotional event, her trauma informed approach is really effective and can get you back on the road to living a more fulfilled and productive life. No longer just surviving BUT thriving!

Sharon works with clients both face to face and online using ZOOM – so Geographical location need not be a barrier. She runs a busy practice in Cambridge however she is also available for clients within the City of London.

Sharon kindly donated a ‘Stress Buster Session’ for our raffle which will be drawn at the December meeting.Roxton Garden Centre

Papworth Everard WI Activity for October 2019

We held a fundraising evening  at Papworth Village Hall on Friday 27th September in aid of the youth organisations of Papworth.   WARRANT OFFICER MO HOWARD MBE (Mo as he prefers to be known) a most distinguished speaker from RAF MARHAM gave a very informative  talk and slideshow giving an insight into the Past Present and Future buildings and aircraft capabilities based at RAF Marham throughout its entire history. The evening was a great success with a diverse range of people attending from not only Papworth but Huntingdon, Hilton and other surrounding villages.  Mo (as he prefers to be known) a most  gave a most impressive talk describing aircraft and their capabilities in the Past compared to now and to what they will be in the future.   WI homemade cakes and refreshments added to the evening as did the raffle where a great variety of prizes were donated by our members.  Thanks go to  our members for providing the wonderful cakes and raffle prizes, to the Courtyard Café and the Deli for selling tickets on our behalf and of course to everyone who came along to make the evening such a success.   A total of £600 plus was raised on the night and we will shortly be announcing how the money will be distributed..Our monthly lunch this month was held at Willingham Barns & Auction Rooms at Willingham where we enjoyed browsing around the antiques and collectables before  enjoying a delicious lunch.

Sarah Bellows from Care Network Cambridgeshire was our speaker this month and described the amazing services and support the organisation offers to people in the their own homes following a hospital stay, illness at home, loneliness etc and how they can help with arrangements to have volunteer support workers to help them get back in some way into the community.  Many of us were surprised at what is being done by Care Network Cambridgeshire and this maybe something our WI could contribute to in some way in the future.

PAPWORTH EVERARD WI ACTIVITY FOR SEPTEMBER 2019

We had a very enjoyable and lively meeting with members catching up with friends and news following the August break.

Jason Middleton along to talk about Gem Stones.  He spoke about various gems, and showed examples of what they were made of, passing round samples of stone for us to handle.  His depth of knowledge and explanation of the Gems gave us all a new interest in our own jewellery and to perhaps think deeply and explore where it originated from. He recommended great care be taken of all pieces of jewellery that you have being mindful of how it was found,  by whom, and how it was mined.  He also brought along a wonderful display of original jewellery for the members to handle and purchase.   He donated a beautiful pair of pearl earrings for our raffle prize.  Many thanks to Jason for a great evening.

As shown below another delicious lunch! – this month at the George and Dragon in Elsworth enjoyed by all.

July 2019

We celebrated PEWI’s 12th birthday this month and an evening full of fun began with a glass of wine or soft drink.  This was followed by our speaker, Elaine McGregor from the Nordoff-Robbins organisation. Elaine told us that the Nordoff–Robbins music therapy charity is grounded in the belief that everyone can respond to music no matter how ill or disabled. Elaine enthralled us with her stories and the video clips she showed us upheld their view that the unique qualities of music as therapy can enhance communication, support change, and enable people to live more resourcefully and creatively.  Elaine works with people of all ages and issues.  Elaine had brought along with her a selection of instruments: drums, rattles, cymbals, and so on and before her talk finished we all joined in accompanying Elaine as she played a few well-known songs and from the smiles on members faces no further proof of the efficacy of music was needed!

The next part of the meeting was for the Breast Cancer Appeal. Members brought along delicious cakes for us to purchase and enjoy with our refreshments (or to take home) and also items for our bring and buy trading table and from the proceeds of this and our raffle ticket money £177.00 was raised for this very worthy cause – a great result.  The evening was a great success.

Our W.I. has a number of individual groups where members get together to enjoy a shared interest and these include cinema and theatre visits, trips to events put on by Cambridge Federation or at Denman College, crafting groups and so on.  A favourite which usually draws around 20-25 members is our monthly lunch and in July we met up for delicious food at Johnsons Farm at Old Hurst and members were able to take time to look round the shop and grounds.

We will be holding a Prosecco and Cupcake evening on Friday 16th August at the Studio by the library and all the ladies of the village, young (over 18) and old, are warmly invited to join us to sample an evening with the W.I. to see what we do. Members will be available to show the things we get up to: patchwork, embroidery, crochet, painting, knitting, card making, and so on.  Please feel free to come down and join us and have a look at what goes on.

Early in the month a few W.I. members together with our President and Liz Barrett’s husband gathered for a short ceremony to plant the rose “Lovely Lady” in memory of Liz Barrett who had always been so supportive and encouraging to our W.I.  The rose is growing in the bed beside the library and is now flourishing and has been flowering profusely.

Why not bring your friends and family along to our open meeting with “RAF Marham – Past Present and Future”  to be held at the Village Hall on Friday 27 September 2019 at 7.30-9.30 pm.  There is a £5 charge for refreshments and a donation the youth organisations in the village.  Tickets for this are now available.

PAPWORTH EVERARD WI JUNE 2018 REPORT

Lunch: This month several members had a most enjoyable lunch at the Ferryboat Inn at Holywell, near St Ives.

Monthly Meeting: Delicious samples of Spanish food were enjoyed by our members at our meeting following a great talk and demonstration by Amanda Hoskins who talked us through the chicken and vegetable paella accompanied by a delicious tomato salad she prepared for us. While the paella was cooking, she held a short quiz with 10 questions relating to Spain and Spanish Food – it was surprising just how much many members knew – resulting in much discussion about people’s holidays and eating experiences in Spain.
